AMHS Wins Bronze
U.S. News & World Report Ranks Arlington Among the Best

Arlington, Vt.,--Arlington Memorial High School was recognized with Bronze Honors by U.S. News
& World Report in its first annual listing of Best High Schools in America 2007 feature.
According to the article, U.S. News and World Report collaborated with School Evaluation
Services (SES), a K-12 data research and analysis business operated by Standard & Poor’s.  More
than 18,000 schools were evaluated in three areas:  state test scores, success rate of the school’s
total population and college-level coursework curriculum.  “To ensure that U.S. News & World
Report captures and recognizes the nation’s best high schools, we teamed with analysts from SES to
develop an innovative methodology that allowed us to analyze how well high schools serve all
students, not just those that perform at the top their class.”
Arlington Superintendent of School Charles Sweetman assessed the significance of the award.
“Of the 18,790 public high schools analyzed across the country, Arlington scored in the top eight
percent.  We are one of only six Vermont schools nationally recognized and acknowledged by U.S.
News & World Report; this is a testament to the quality of education Arlington offers its students.
I commend the leadership of Principal Kerry Csizmesia and the faculty who have done such a fine
job in preparing our students and emphasizing that ‘good enough’ is never really good enough for a
system that always strives to be great and to improve; attitude and expectations are everything.  I
applaud the Arlington School Board and its leadership for the direction it has provided the system.
The Arlington community has been incredibly supportive of education, and it’s nice to see this type
of recognition for our residents, our staff, our students and our alumni.  Congratulations to all.”
Principal of Arlington Memorial High School & Middle School for the past 16 years, Kerry
Csizmesia was pleased but not surprised with the Bronze Award.  “Our primary mission is to
prepare our kids to be successful adults, and we do an excellent job at that.  Our students go on to
great colleges and universities, distinguished military careers and jobs that are rewarding to them.
They serve their communities and make us proud of their accomplishments every day.  You can’t ask
for better than that.”
Arlington School Board Chair K.John Smith credits the administration and faculty’s ongoing
efforts for the school’s success.  “Arlington is known for ‘raising the bar’ and challenging students
from kindergarten to graduation to reach their potential.  It’s a small school (240 students grades
6-12), but it’s not small on learning.  With support from Superintendent Sweetman, Principal
Csizmesia and our faculty, we have instituted more technology (five technology labs in the district),
more foreign language courses (five--Chinese, Spanish, French, Latin and Sign Language), more
advanced placement courses (eight--AP Art, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Music Theory, AP
Statistics, AP U.S. History and two AP English classes), enhanced curriculum and increased
graduation requirements and higher expectations for all.  Our families know Arlington schools care
about students’ success.”
