2009-2010
Hi and Welcome to Fisher Elementary School!
Whether you are a new family to the school district, a returning family or a prospective one,
we hope this site offers you valuable information about the mission of Fisher Elementary
School.
Located in the southwest corner of Vermont, Fisher offers a Kindergarten through Grade 5
education to 140 students who live in the communities of Arlington and Sandgate. Curriculum
and planning goals are shared at the K-2 and 3-5 levels with an overall mission of “creating
an instructional process whereby all students are able to achieve their academic potential.”
Academics
K-2 Collaborative
There are two classrooms for each Kindergarten, first and second grade with an average of
12-14 students in each room. The small size of the classes is most appropriate for students
of this age who need individualized attention as they adjust to a school setting. The six
teachers meet monthly for collaborative planning time in which they outline common
curriculum goals and share ideas for partnering.
The 3-5 Collaborative
For students in grades 3-5, classes are combined into one homeroom, students have lockers
for storage and science lab is added to the curriculum. Teachers in the 3-5 Collaborative
have developed a program to encourage students to move beyond the contained classroom
model to a collaborative education style of learning. Students switch classrooms and
teachers throughout the day to increase their learning time for math, science and literacy.
Through this program, the teachers are better able to address individual learning styles.
Enrichment
Fisher Elementary offers a wide range of enrichment activities for students before, during and
after school. Our “specials” for all grade levels include computer, art, music, library and
physical education. Students in grades 2-5 can receive instrument instruction in group or
individual settings and participate in Library Book Club, where students gather for lunch
weekly to share the chapter books they’ve read with friends. Students arriving early to school
can participate in an arts-n-crafts class, and through the Arlington Arts & Enrichment
Program, Fisher offers a variety of after-school activities including fencing, cooking,
snowshoeing, hip hop dance, journalism and mosaics.
Communication
Families are always welcome at Fisher. Whether it’s popping in to have lunch with your child
or attending one of our numerous events throughout the year, we want you to be a part of
your students’ efforts and achievement.
We also want to know of any concerns or questions you may have. As you browse through
this website, you will see the Faculty page which offers direct email links to Fisher faculty and
staff for easy email communication. The Contact Us page provides mailing addresses and
phone and fax information. Please call, email or stop in to set up a time to meet. Your child’s
educational experience is as important to us as it is to you.
Finally
Fisher Elementary is a community school in the very best sense. Your child will not “get lost
in the shuffle” here. We know our students, we care about their success and we want them to
achieve and grow in a caring and supportive environment.
All the best to you.
