What does an Elementary School Counselor do?

An elementary school counselor’s primary function is to provide a comprehensive guidance program for
students in grades K-5 and specifically provide activities to meet the needs of their assigned case-load.
An elementary school counselor consults with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness
in helping students and provide other educational guidance curriculum programs.



At Fisher Elementary, Ms. McDonald:

(1)   Implements elementary guidance curriculum lessons in classrooms, covering topics from team-
building to bullying to making smart choices.

(2)   Counsels students individually.

(3)   Runs small groups, such as the “Lunch Bunch,” a group that focuses on self-confidence, self-
esteem, positive peer interaction, as well as social skills.

(4)   Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of their
students.

(5)   Refers students with severe problems to appropriate community agencies in consultation with their
parents.

(6)   Coordinates or conducts activities which contribute to the needs of the school, such as the Big
Brothers Big Sisters program.

(7)   Pursues professional development growth activities.
