There are 39 species of falcons, including the
Prairie, Crested Caracara, American Kestrel,
Merlin, and White Falcon. The Peregrine Falcon
is especially interesting because the bird reaches
120-175 miles per hour while diving
(or “stooping,” as it’s called).

Historically, humans have harnessed the skills of
the falcon to help deliver messages and hunt for
food. In many cultures they are given to royalty
as gifts.

Many falcon species are endangered. Pesticides have played a major
role in their decline. But thanks to many recovery programs, their numbers
